Overview
Astronomical data provides unique challenges like complex uncertainties in the covariates, biased and censored data, low signal-to-noise ratios and model misspecification which are not all directly addressed by off-the-shelf statistical tools necessitating the development of new methodologies. The proposed Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) Interest Group will act as a hub to connect astronomers and statisticians within the Rubin community to develop new methodologies that address the critical need for rigorous statistical validation of uncertainty estimates within the LSST analysis pipelines. The primary scope of this group will be to create an interdisciplinary community of scientists who will first identify the specific needs of uncertainty quantification for various scientific analysis and then identify proper statistical research directions to address those challenges eventually leading to new publications by the group members.
